Introduction to Music Therapy

Today, we are so excited to share more about a new offering from the Collaborative Counseling and Nutrition team: individual and group music therapy with Wren Buse, MT-BC!

What is music therapy?

Music therapy is the clinical use of music-based activities to support therapeutic change. Music activities might include listening to music, song lyric analysis, music making, movement, mindfulness exercises, improvisation, songwriting, and more. We collaborate with you to write goals based on what you are looking for.  Some common music therapy goals are to support experiencing and regulating emotions, improving self-image, expanding coping skills, and supporting self-expression.

What education does a music therapist receive?

A music therapist receives a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Music Therapy. This includes a variety of musical training including guitar, piano, songwriting, improvisation, and advancing on a “primary” instrument. We take courses in music therapy and study social sciences like psychology and special education. After finishing coursework, we complete a 6-month internship totaling 1200 clinical hours followed by the board certification exam.

Who might want to receive music therapy?

People who enjoy music and are interested in personal growth are great candidates. Music therapy may be a great option for people who have been in therapy long-term and are seeking something new in their therapy, and for people who may not always like processing through traditional talk therapy.

Do I need music experience?

All prior music experience levels are welcome (including no experience)!

Will there be any music therapy groups?

Music therapy occurs individually and in groups! This spring we’ll be offering a 16-week music therapy support group for fat individuals seeking fat liberation. This group is designed for individuals in larger bodies to hold space together in community and expand their relationship with their bodies and self. To celebrate the first music therapy group with Collab Counseling, there will be a discounted rate!  More details will come out soon.
